چکیده

Dielectrics are essential components in modern electronics and electric systems. When a sufficiently high voltage is applied on a layer of a dielectric, the dielectric will breakdown electrically. The breakdown limits the electrical energy density of the dielectric. We show that constraining the deformation of soft dielectrics can greatly enhance their breakdown electric fields and thus increase their electrical energy densities. The mechanical constraints suppress electromechanical instabilities, a major cause for electrical breakdowns in soft dielectrics. VC 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3655910]

Harnessing large deformation and instabilities of soft dielectrics: Theory, experiment, and application

Widely used as insulators, capacitors, and transducers in daily life, soft dielectrics based on polymers and polymeric gels play important roles in modern electrified society. Owning to their mechanical compliance, soft dielectrics subject to voltages frequently undergo large deformation and mechanical instabilities. The deformation and instabilities can lead to detrimental failures in some app...

Revisiting the Instability and Bifurcation Behavior of Soft Dielectrics

Development of soft electromechanical materials is critical for several tantalizing applications such as human-like robots, stretchable electronics, actuators, energy harvesting, among others. Soft dielectrics can be easily deformed by an electric field through the socalled electrostatic Maxwell stress. The highly nonlinear coupling between the mechanical and electrical effects in soft dielectr...

Real-time recoverable and irrecoverable energy in dispersive-dissipative dielectrics.

We discuss the recoverable and irrecoverable energy densities associated with a pulse at a point in the propagation medium and derive easily computed expressions to calculate these quantities. Specific types of fields are required to retrieve the recoverable portion of the energy density from the point in the medium, and we discuss the properties that these fields must have. Several examples ar...

Energy Efficiency Analyses of Toolpaths in a Pocket Milling Process

This paper presents an approach to analytically determine the most energy efficient toolpath strategy in mechanical machining. This was achieved by evaluating the electrical energy requirement of the NC codes generated for the zag, zigzag, and rectangular contour toolpath strategies. The analytical method was validated by performing pocket milling on AISI 1018 steel with the considered toolpath...

Mesoporous Nano-Silica Serves as the Degradation Inhibitor in Polymer Dielectrics

A new generation of nano-additives for robust high performance nanodielectrics is proposed. It is demonstrated for the first time that mesoporous material could act as "degradation inhibitor" for polymer dielectrics to sequestrate the electrical degradation products then restrain the electrical aging process especially under high temperature conditions, which is superior to the existing additiv...
